for a “jumpin good time”!
Just a little ways off highway 49 situated between Modesto and Stockton, in majestic Northern California lies the quaint little town of Angels. No, it’s not noteworthy for its angel related stories or sightings. It is known for an originally “American inspired activity”, and a time-honored celebrated tradition referred to as “Frog Jumping”.
Frog Town (as it is affectionately called), is located just a few miles south of town, also houses a first class RV Campground, and the Calaveras County Fair Grounds. The event held each year in May, draws several thousands of on-lookers, into this tiny little hamlet of around 3800 residents. A former mining town, “Angels” got its name from two Brothers who fought in the Mexican-American War, Henry and George Angel. Who were one of first to try their hand at prospecting, only to give it up, due to the labor intensive work entailed. They established a trading post, which soon became a Mining Camp, (called appropriately “Angels Camp”, (which will still show on many modern maps today as such), and then eventually in 1912 became an incorporated town under the shortened name of just “Angels”.
The Gold Rush period of California basically lasted from 1848 to around the mid 1850’s. However the quartz bearing gold veins found in this general location produced an astonishing $20 million dollars in milled gold, and managed to operate for the better part of two and a half decades, far longer than most California mining ventures would “pan-out”.
Now if the history isn’t enough to draw you to this laid back paradise for your next year’s vacation plans, maybe you Californians (especially) might enjoy a good-old-fashioned County Fair, complete with Funnel Cakes, Rides, and the myriad of test-your-ability games of chance. You might also just decide to meander over to the Frog Town event, and catch the competition. This event was first made famous by America’s own son and author Mark Twain, who chronicled the event in a short story he wrote back in 1865, called “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, which coincidently would become Mr. Twains first great success as a writer. So, you could even say this event was the dawning of yet another great American original.
This is definitely a sure-fire “Bucket List Event” for me, that just sounds way too interesting to pass up. Besides, don’t you think it’s about time you supported the Go-Green movement. So if you have been longing for some ideas for something a bit different, well here you go. Maybe you might even spot me there in the bleachers watching the green-legged -competition action.
