Explosion Rocks Cruise Ship

Associated Press is reporting from Oslo Norway – An explosion in the engine room has claimed the lives of 2 of her compliment of 55 crew members, along with nine other of the “MS Nordlys” crew were taken to local area hospitals two of which were serious burn cases.
The 691 passenger cruise ship built-in 1994, and operated by Hurtigruten; was reportedly carrying only about 262 passengers. None of the passengers were hurt or injured as a result of the incident. The explosion and fire which began around 9:20 am local time (3:20am EDT) on Thursday occurring just prior to a port call in Aalesund Norway, which is located about 230 miles from the Capital City of Oslo. The Passengers were all brought on deck, given their life vests, and were evacuated safely from the vessel. Reports from the scene state that the evacuation went smoothly with no passenger panic.
Initial investigations indicate that the fire was confined to the engine room only, and that two specialized maritime fire brigades responded to the ship, to assist in extinguishing the fire. It is unclear as to some initial reports regarding the fire suppression system not working, which are as yet not able to be confirmed. An investigation is underway as the ship remains moored in port at Aalesund.
