She’s Back and even Better!!
Just as Royal Caribbean’s 90,000 ton, 2112 passenger carrying “ Radiance of the Seas”, finishes up her most recent three-week, $20 million revitalization from her dry dock stay in Victoria B.C., and begins her Alaska sailing, she has emerged one transformed vessel. For a complete and comprehensive review of all of her transformations (check out the video) take a look for yourself!
New additions will include a few venues found only on other class of ships such as a New “Park Cafe” sandwich shop, and the ever popular “DogHouse” hot dog shop!! Leaving both tongues and tails wagging long after your cruise. Certainly treats for every age has been thought of here! One of her many new venues she is boasting is the “Quill and Compass”, English style Pub, which has replaced the former Scoreboard Sports Bar.
Certainly of her many new up-scale dining venues which have been place on-board topping the list is RCCL’s famed “Chef’s Table” which is a reservations required culinary delight which features a delightful 5 course meal prepared and served with a “chef’s eye” up close and personal participant viewing, including special wines to compliment the various dishes. (Cost is $95 pp) but usually is a sold out affair!
A nicer steakhouse venue called “Samba Steakhouse and Grill” which as a specialty dining venue has a surcharge of $25 pp, and also will be Giovanni’s (a wonderful Italian specialty restaurant) which will replace Portofino’s , and will offer Lunch ($15 pp surcharge) and dinner for ($20 pp). Which, will offer up some wonderful dining variance possibilities, while on your cruise adventure.
Izumi Restaurant, offering Sushi and Pan-Asian cuisine, which is being offered to the Radiance Class of Ships for the very first time, as well as Rita’s Cantina offering Mexican fare that was first popularized on the Allure of the Seas to a huge success.
Some of the nuances to the ships services and amenities will include:
A New Poolside Video Screen, for Movies under the Stars (a family favorite for sure). Speaking of family needs will be the inclusion of “Royal Tots and Babies” aboard the Radiance, which will offer parents a full service drop off nursery facility for infants from 6 months of age, up to 36 months for a fee of $8 per hour. It is interesting to note, that this is only the fifth ship in the Royal fleet that offers such service.
Guest will also be delighted with the addition of 15 new staterooms, 3 of which have been much talked about, and a first for the Royal Caribbean fleet, in being designed specifically with the solo traveler in mind. These rooms were actually redesigned former room service staging areas. However, the sad news is that they never made these rooms available for the public, they have been getting utilized as company guests and storage needs. Sad but true!
Also included in the remodel is Interactive Flat screen Televisions, on Board Wi-Fi capability, as well as a completely enhanced digital touch screens “Wayfinder” signage throughout the ship, which was first made popular on the Oasis Class of Ships. With Tons of Upgrades and Brand Icons that passengers have come to know and appreciate, this vessel while not new, certainly boasts many wonderful and new experiences to behold. Definately a ship worth sailing, or resailing again!

Really enjoyed this post on a new look for and older ship. July of 2010 I cruised on this ship, and from your articles depictions, now seems like an entirely new ship, so I wouldn’t hesitate to cruise on it again. I wasn’t even aware of this aspect of the Cruise Lines, I merely thought they painted, and put in new carpet and draperies. Totally shocked at what they can do in just a few weeks time. Thank you much.
REPLY: Dear Zultan, as the article shows, the Cruise Industry goes to extreme measures to rennovate and refurbish it’s fleet and mostly at a surprisingly rather high cost. Thank you for your comments, I am glad you found the article helpful. Please visit again, often.-CruisewithMike

Hi Mike
Thanks so much for your article on the “new” Radiance of the Seas. We cruised on the Radiance in Sept 2006 on a relocation from Vancouver to LA and loved the ship. We are booked to sail on the Radiance again from Sydney, Australia in February 2012. Now having a 22 month old daughter (at the time of sailing) it was the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery that made our decision to sail on the Radiance as opposed to a land based holiday as easy one. Our daughter loves her day care and we know she will really enjoy the RB&TN and we also get to enjoy some time alone to go to dinner and see a show each night. We are also looking to book on the Voyager of the Seas when it comes down to Sydney in late 2012. Do you know if there are any plans to put a Royal Babies & Tots Nursery on the Voyager prior to its deployment to Australia?
Thanks
Mike Carroll, Sydney Australia
Dear Mike,
Thanks for your wonderful comment. At present we are not aware that Voyager will be getting Royal Tots and Babies. Interesting that we understand that Voyagers Revitalization is a Two Phase Plan, and we will need to keep a sharp eye out for that second phase to begin. Whereas, the Remodels with inclusion of RT&B’s have all occured in the Freeport Bahamas Facility, and are presently only been retrofitted onto three ships other than Oasis and Allure which are Two Liberty Class Ships, (Liberty and Freedom), and just most recently to the Radiance. Thanks for the question!!-CruisewithMike
Nice work. Awaiting more posts!
